The Alliance Française of Suva was created in 1987. It is part of a worldwide network of over 1100 Alliances Française, the oldest of which was created in 1883 in Paris. It is also a local organisation, officially registered in Fiji as a non-profit organisation. It is headed by an administrative committee and has established a collaboration agreement with the French Embassy in Suva. The current President of the Alliance Française of Suva is Miss Malini Raghwan.
The Alliance Française of Suva (AFS) is a school of French language and
culture teaching French, and in Suva also Fijian and Hindi as well at
all levels for all walks of life. Since 2002, students can sit for the
French DELF exams at the AFS.
The linguistic area of the AFS also encompasses translations and
interpreting which are offered in the following languages: French,
English, Fijian, Hindi. Over the last few years, the AFS has had the
opportunity to work in Fiji for international and regional
organisations, embassies, or the private sector and individuals.
The AFS also offers a Media Center. A growing collection of French
DVDs, subtitled in English, and music CDs await users. Also available
are books; aside from novels (French novels and novels translated in
English) the most important collections deal with contemporary France
and the Pacific region. The younger users (and those young at heart!)
are not forgotten, with a comprehensive collection of French 'Bandes
Dessinées' or comics for children and young adults, and learning books
for toddlers and preschoolers.
Lastly, the Alliance Française has for aim the promotion of cultural
exchanges. To this end, it puts in place, often in partnership with
other associations or Fijian institutions, artistical projects
involving local artists and / or from France and the Pacific region, in
particular French-speaking territories (Wallis and Futuna, New
Caledonia, French Polynesia). Film nights, conferences, expositions,
music festivals, dance spectacles, theatrical shows and other events
are frequently organised.
In 2007, a branch of the Alliance Française was created in the Western side of Viti Levu, being hosted by the University of Fiji in Saweni.
